Hungary’s Gyula Halász, better known as Brassaï (1899-1984), was a key member of a group of European and North American photographers who managed to redefine and enrich the potential of photography as an artistic medium over the 20th century. The Fundación Mapfre is now offering a retrospective display of some of his most iconic images.

The main theme for his work was Paris, which appeared in his most significant and most renowned photos. He captured vital moments in the city’s everyday life, particularly its appearance and vitality at night, in a clear expression of powerful artistic vision.

The evocative capacity of his images earned him unquestionable recognition, which extended from artistic photography circles to the tourist industry and commercial photography circuits.
