Elena Kostyuchenko’s reports about present-day Russia chronicle the experiences of people who are silenced and abandoned by the system: young people, members of the LGBTIQ+ community, people in isolated villages, and also shed light on conditions in orphanages, environmental crimes, police corruption, and more.

In her recently published book El meu país estimat [I Love Russia: Reporting from a Lost Country], she presents a hidden country by interweaving autobiographical accounts with fifteen years of journalistic reports written for Nóvaia Gazeta, Russia’s last free daily, which was shut down in retaliation for her criticism of the army. Kostyuchenko’s life has been threatened because of her journalism and she now lives in exile.

In this conversation with translator Miquel Cabal, Elena Kostyuchenko shares a choral account of today’s Russia through journalism committed to telling the truth, and considers the possibilities of working as a journalist under the Putin regime.
