Poetry. With jazz, poetry and hip hop, this artist speaks of love, joy and resistance.

On Thursday 10 July, American poet and activist Aja Monet will be presenting her show when the poems do what they do at El Molino, as part of the Grec Festival.

With verses that explore resistance, political love, and ancestral memory, her performance will be accompanied by an exceptional band featuring the likes of Christian Scott (trumpet) and Marcus Gilmore (percussion), and is based on her debut album of the same name, nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Spoken Word Poetry Album category in 2024.

Monet, who is originally from New York but now resides in LA, has picked up awards such as the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Poetry Award (2019) and the Nelson Mandela Changemaker Award (2024), and her work explores the power of language as a tool for social transformation.
