‘Siren songs, fascination and abyss’

Did you know that going on board with street footwear, exchanging salt between boats, opening an umbrella or the presence of rabbits or priests on top of a boat are associated with bad luck, according to popular beliefs that are still around today?

‘Siren songs, fascination and abyss’ is an exhibition dealing with the cultural expressions that have been generated by human beings through time with regard to the fear and the fascination caused by the sea: beliefs, legends, tales, fantastic creatures, taboos, magic formulas and expressions of popular religiousness….

The exhibition is divided into three sections: the sea and the fantastic creatures which, according to human imagination, inhabit the marine depths; the rites and legends relating to how to protect a vessel about to go to sea, and maritime beliefs as part of the intangible heritage of humanity.
