Opera. David McVicar’s brilliant production comes to the Liceu.

Synopsis

La Traviata, or Violetta Valéry, is a Paris courtesan with a very glamorous life who sells her body like Alexandre Dumas fils’s La Dame aux Camelias, on which Verdi’s opera is based. A woman with her own inner light, she suffers from TB and will be forced to sacrifice her love for Alfredo Germont due to of the pressure of social conventions. Alfredo’s father doesn’t approve of the relationship, and the family's reputation is called into question.

Initially worldly and vain, Violetta will be the next victim of a capitalist system that crushes dreams. With brilliant virtuoso music, she savagely criticises a society based on appearances, a machine that destroys people, especially when those people are women who aspire to be free. Sempre libera, Violetta’s most famous aria, is a desperate cry to regain a space that she hasn’t yet realised she’s about to lose.

Approximate length: 3 hours.
