Schedule

Following the Greek and Roman medical tradition, transmitted to the medieval West through the Arabs, medieval medicine understood that the human body comprised four elements in balance with one another (air, water, earth and fire), identified with four humours (blood, yellow bile, black bile and phlegm). In the Middle Ages, disease was understood as an imbalance of these elements that had to be restored, firstly, through diet, secondly, with pharmacology and only as a last option resorting to surgery. This activity offers the chance to visit the medieval garden of the monastery and pay particular attention to the medicinal plants used in the Middle Ages to balance the body and guarantee health. Finally, as part of a practical workshop, we will explain the uses made of a number of medicinal plants in the Middle Ages and the uses that we make of them today. At this workshop, participants will make a lavender soap with relaxing properties that makes a perfect gift for this holiday season.
