“Voices of the Pacific. Innovation and Tradition”

Oceania is a complex network of islands and cultures united by the Pacific. This ocean has not only been their means of subsistence but has also inspired the development of their creativity.

The exhibition Voices of the Pacific. Innovation and Tradition presents over 200 historical and contemporary pieces from the British Museum collections, originating from various Pacific islands. It includes ceremonial paddles and carved basalt ancestor figures, garments made with mulberry bark, hats, scale models of war canoes, chokers, nasal decorations and mother of pearl hooks.

This comprehensive collection shows the artistic genius of the Oceanic peoples, structured into seven sections: innovation and tradition, innovators, weavers, dancers, warriors, carvers and voyagers.
