Ramon Calsina. ‘Misèries humanes’ [Human Miseries]

Ramon Calsina is one of the most unique twentieth-century Catalan painters. The fact that he built a career outside the official trends left him somewhat sidelined despite the importance of his artistic legacy. The exhibition Misèries humanes [Human Miseries] aims to shed light on the more uncomfortable side of his work, particularly his drawings.

With a mirror-like effect, his drawings illustrate and make us see all the vices and virtues of human existence, while also moving us with their tenderness and humanity. They have remained relevant in both form and substance despite the passage of time. His social criticism, shedding light on issues like gender violence, war and the systemic crisis from the vantage point of the 1930s, makes him a visionary artist who has become timeless through his observation of the world around him.
